The track completion in the build of the world’s most interactive rollercoaster was conducted by a 50-strong team, using a crane to hoist the final piece of steel track into place.

This sees a key section of the rollercoaster complete which will see riders catapulted forward at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour ahead of soaring to heights of 82 feet.

ICON’s 1.14 kilometre track has been installed over a period of five months and this significant development milestone sees all of the rollercoaster track construction now complete. Focus will now turn to putting the finishing touches to the UK’s first double launch rollercoaster, which features two powerful thrusts of acceleration, as well as a rigorous period of safety testing ahead of its opening.

Amanda Thompson OBE, Managing Director at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, comments; “Since work began in December 2016 we have seen hundreds of pieces of track hoisted into position in anticipation of this moment.

“The track comprises of hundreds of tonnes of world-class steel transported from Germany and manufactured using state-of-the-art engineering processes for a smoother, faster and more exhilarating ride than ever experienced before.”

Nick Thompson, Deputy Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach adds; “Today is the culmination of an intense design and engineering process to bring a ride that is the first of its kind to the UK.

“The completion of ICON’s track has been no easy feat, as it loops through and around the Pleasure Beach’s other rides 15 times. To see the track in its entirety is hugely rewarding and brings us a significant step closer to sharing this unique rollercoaster experience with the public in spring 2018.”

Newly-released images of Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s new £16.25 million rollercoaster ICON reveal the ride rising to heights of 20 metres before cutting through the lift hill of the world-famous Big One rollercoaster.

The behind-the-scenes pictures, taken while the park doors are closed for winter, show where riders will be propelled out of a tunnel, soaring through the Big One structure at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.

This marks the first interaction point of a ride which will become the world’s most interactive, looping through, underneath and around Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s other rides 15 times, over 1.14 kilometres of grey steel track.

Due to launch in spring 2018, riders will be taken to places they’ve never been before whizzing through legendary rides including the Steeplechase, Big Dipper and Pleasure Beach Express, for a thrilling experience they’ll never forget.

An aerial image shows how the huge steel structure will slot in amongst the park’s other rides– making it the world’s most ride-intensive amusement park offering more thrills and spills per square foot than anywhere else.

Since work began in December 2016 over 100,000 hours have been invested on site by a team of 50 and hundreds of tonnes of grey steel track have been hoisted into position.

Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Amanda Thompson OBE, said of the construction: “This is a key milestone in the build which marks the first in a series of thrilling interactions to guarantee riders a truly exhilarating experience.

“What we’ve achieved so far is impressive to see and a credit to all involved. We’re looking forward to visitors getting their very first glimpse of ICON when our doors open on 10 February.”

ICON will be the UK’s first ever double launch rollercoaster, giving adrenalin junkies two powerful thrusts of acceleration during the ride and is set to reach heights of 88.5ft, with drops of up to 82ft.

An ICON is born

On 11th April 2017 Blackpool Pleasure Beach revealed the name of the highly anticipated ride 'ICON'.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has begun the construction of it’s new £16.25m rollercoaster. Originally dubbed as ‘Construction 2018′ now named ‘ICON’ – the ride will feature the most number of interactions in the world with 15 interactions involving five different rides and two tunnels. It will be the UK’s first double launch roller coaster – the ‘launch’ is administered by an advanced technology that gives the roller coaster two powerful thrusts of acceleration during the ride.

The ride is being manufactured by Mack Rides at their world-class factory in Waldkirch, Germany, utilising the latest state-of-the-art engineering processes, including laser beam technology for extreme accuracy. The ride will open in Spring 2018.

ICON ride facts

A double launch will see thrill seekers propelled forward at high speed, not only at the start of the ride, but also at a second point half way through the two and a half minute experience. Riders will experience the same levels of G force as felt by the driver of a Formula 1 car. The launch of the ride features acceleration which is 4 times that experienced in a Lamborghini Gallardo.

‘ICON’ will reach heights of 88.5ft with drops of up to 82ft. It will interact with five other Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides including the iconic Big One, Steeplechase, Big Dipper, Pleasure Beach Express and the Grand Prix.

Over 44,800 hours have been invested in the development to date with that number expected to treble ahead of completion.

Construction 2018 is announced

Speaking on the announcement Deputy Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Nick Thompson, comments: “We have been working on this concept for five years now and are delighted to be able share news of our plans.

“Construction 2018 (ICON) will be fast, adrenalin fueled and exhilarating but also smooth and comfortable – an entirely new ride experience. It sees a significant investment in Blackpool Pleasure Beach. We expect to see thrill seekers flock to the park to experience this UK ride first.”

Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the world’s most ride intensive amusement park, is home to the UK’s first looping coaster, Revolution, and, at the time it was built, the world’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster, The Big One, plus many more thrilling rides. I’m delighted to be able to continue this tradition and bring such a thrilling ride to the UK.”
