Experience ICON - now open to the public

Ride ICON, the UK's first double launch rollercoaster included with a Pleasure Beach unlimited rides Wristband.

ICON is Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s newest ride and the UK’s first double launch rollercoaster. ICON accelerates at 0-80km/h in 2.25 seconds before reaching heights of 88ft at speeds of upto 85km/h.

The ride closely interacts with other rides and attractions 15 times during its high-speed journey across the park.

The double launch means that not only does the ride launch at high speed but midway through the experience a second boost of acceleration launches passengers into the highest point of the ride.

ICON ride facts

A double launch will see thrill seekers propelled forward at high speed, not only at the start of the ride, but also at a second point half way through the two and a half minute experience. Riders will experience the same levels of G force as felt by the driver of a Formula 1 car. The launch of the ride features acceleration which is 4 times that experienced in a Lamborghini Gallardo.

‘ICON’ will reach heights of 88.5ft with drops of up to 82ft. It will interact with five other Blackpool Pleasure Beach rides including the iconic Big One, Steeplechase, Big Dipper, Pleasure Beach Express and the Grand Prix.

Over 44,800 hours have been invested in the development to date with that number expected to treble ahead of completion.

The ride’s soundtrack is now available for eager fans to purchase.

ICON: Dare to Ride (The Original Soundtrack) can be downloaded now on iTunes and Google Play Store for just £3.99 and features five versions – ICON Main Theme, Anticipation ICON, Dramatic ICON, Euphoric ICON and ICON Continuous Mix.

The ride soundtrack, which was created by The Notable Stranger, reflects the thrills and excitement of ICON. The soundtrack has been created with different stages of the ride in mind. The queueline music will build anticipation whilst the music playing as you leave the ride will reflect the thrills a rider has just experienced.

Amanda Thompson, OBE, Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach comments, “A ride’s soundtrack is extremely important to enhancing the overall experience and we spent many hours working with The Notable Stranger to develop music which really reflects the personality of the ride.

“Since we started using the soundtrack in our marketing, the response from people wanting to own a copy has been huge so we decided to make it available for everyone to enjoy.”

ICON will open to the public later in the spring and will be the UK’s first double launch rollercoaster. ICON launches visitors on an exhilarating two and a half minute journey where they will feel the same acceleration as a Formula 1 driver, before twisting and turning at speeds of up to 80 km/h across the park. ICON swoops and rises through tunnels and also interacts 15 times, at high speeds with five other rides. A second boost of speed will then launch riders to heights of 88.5ft, with drops of up to 82ft, giving even the bravest of thrill seekers an unforgettable experience.

Carriage unveiled and takes first test run

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has unveiled the rollercoaster carriage for its new ride – ICON, this week, as the ride is launched for the very first time.

The key milestone in the build of the world’s most interactive rollercoaster saw one of three 16-seater steel carriages installed onto the completed track for the first test run of the £16.25 million ride.

Exclusive video footage reveals the copper gold carriages, crafted using the finest German steel and using state-of-the-art engineering techniques, launched round the tracks at speeds of up to 85 kilometres per hour. 16 water ballasts were placed in the carriages to simulate the weight of the average rider.

This latest development gave an exclusive preview of what those who ‘dare to ride’ can expect when Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s £16.25 million rollercoaster opens to the public later this spring.

Speaking on the significant moment, Amanda Thompson OBE, Managing Director at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, said: “We have been on an incredible journey building this rollercoaster, seeing its towering presence on the park and entwining with some of our most popular rides, it really has been epic.

“This is a momentous occasion for us, seeing ICON take to the tracks as the carriages are powered for the very first time. This first run has shown exactly what riders can look forward to – a smooth but exhilarating ride like no other rollercoaster in the world.”

Nick Thompson, Deputy Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach adds; “Seeing ICON’s first run has been fantastic, it’s so exciting to see the carriages race through the tracks and meet its new heights.

“The weeks leading up to opening will see us put a few final finishing touches to the rollercoaster, ensuring we really do deliver a unique experience to the public when we open this spectacular world-first.”

The track completion in the build of the world’s most interactive rollercoaster was conducted by a 50-strong team, using a crane to hoist the final piece of steel track into place.

This sees a key section of the rollercoaster complete which will see riders catapulted forward at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour ahead of soaring to heights of 82 feet.

ICON’s 1.14 kilometre track has been installed over a period of five months and this significant development milestone sees all of the rollercoaster track construction now complete. Focus will now turn to putting the finishing touches to the UK’s first double launch rollercoaster, which features two powerful thrusts of acceleration, as well as a rigorous period of safety testing ahead of its opening.

Amanda Thompson OBE, Managing Director at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, comments; “Since work began in December 2016 we have seen hundreds of pieces of track hoisted into position in anticipation of this moment.

“The track comprises of hundreds of tonnes of world-class steel transported from Germany and manufactured using state-of-the-art engineering processes for a smoother, faster and more exhilarating ride than ever experienced before.”

Nick Thompson, Deputy Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach adds; “Today is the culmination of an intense design and engineering process to bring a ride that is the first of its kind to the UK.

“The completion of ICON’s track has been no easy feat, as it loops through and around the Pleasure Beach’s other rides 15 times. To see the track in its entirety is hugely rewarding and brings us a significant step closer to sharing this unique rollercoaster experience with the public in spring 2018.”

Newly-released images of Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s new £16.25 million rollercoaster ICON reveal the ride rising to heights of 20 metres before cutting through the lift hill of the world-famous Big One rollercoaster.

The behind-the-scenes pictures, taken while the park doors are closed for winter, show where riders will be propelled out of a tunnel, soaring through the Big One structure at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.

This marks the first interaction point of a ride which will become the world’s most interactive, looping through, underneath and around Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s other rides 15 times, over 1.14 kilometres of grey steel track.

Due to launch in spring 2018, riders will be taken to places they’ve never been before whizzing through legendary rides including the Steeplechase, Big Dipper and Pleasure Beach Express, for a thrilling experience they’ll never forget.

An aerial image shows how the huge steel structure will slot in amongst the park’s other rides– making it the world’s most ride-intensive amusement park offering more thrills and spills per square foot than anywhere else.

Since work began in December 2016 over 100,000 hours have been invested on site by a team of 50 and hundreds of tonnes of grey steel track have been hoisted into position.

Managing Director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Amanda Thompson OBE, said of the construction: “This is a key milestone in the build which marks the first in a series of thrilling interactions to guarantee riders a truly exhilarating experience.

“What we’ve achieved so far is impressive to see and a credit to all involved. We’re looking forward to visitors getting their very first glimpse of ICON when our doors open on 10 February.”

ICON will be the UK’s first ever double launch rollercoaster, giving adrenalin junkies two powerful thrusts of acceleration during the ride and is set to reach heights of 88.5ft, with drops of up to 82ft.

An ICON is born

On 11th April 2017 Blackpool Pleasure Beach revealed the name of the highly anticipated ride 'ICON'.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach has begun the construction of it’s new £16.25m rollercoaster. Originally dubbed as ‘Construction 2018′ now named ‘ICON’ – the ride will feature the most number of interactions in the world with 15 interactions involving five different rides and two tunnels. It will be the UK’s first double launch roller coaster – the ‘launch’ is administered by an advanced technology that gives the roller coaster two powerful thrusts of acceleration during the ride.

The ride is being manufactured by Mack Rides at their world-class factory in Waldkirch, Germany, utilising the latest state-of-the-art engineering processes, including laser beam technology for extreme accuracy. The ride will open in Spring 2018.
